Summer vacation may be ending for many as school starts back, but finding fun things to do in Texas never ends, especially this weekend. Find sandcastle building lessons in Galveston, salsa dancing lessons in Addison, or canoers and kayakers racing through the river in downtown San Antonio.

Texas International Fishing Tournament

South Padre Island: Aug. 2-6
Port Isabel and South Padre Island host Texas' largest saltwater fishing tournament.

XIT Rodeo and Reunion

Dalhart: Aug. 3-5
Celebrate the cowhands who worked and farmed the 3,000,000-acre XIT Ranch. Enjoy nightly rodeos, dances, and free food—including the world's largest free barbecue. Activities throughout the weekend include a street parade, a craft show, a wild cow–milking contest, a nickle scramble, and a fiddlers contest.

Dive-In Movie: "Finding Dory"

Lake Jackson: Aug. 4
The Disney Pixar film comes to life when you float outdoors in the Lake Jackson Outdoor Pool.

Sandcastle Days

Galveston: Aug. 5
Take advantage of the final summer weekend to get a free sandcastle lesson from the pros near the Stewart Beach Pavilion. The day will begin with an instructor building a sandcastle from 8-11 a.m. followed by lessons at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Equipment will be provided on a limited basis and participants are encouraged to bring their own sand buckets and shovels.

Coin and Collectible Show

Houston: Aug. 5-6
More than 70 local and national dealers head to the Arabia Shrine Center to display and exchange rare U.S. coins, gold and silver bullion, ancient coins, paper money, stamps, historical documents, comics, jewelry, stock and bond certificates, ceramics, glass, supplies, books, and more.

Pacific Combat Living History Reenactment

Fredericksburg: Aug. 5-6
See equipment and weapons used during WWII and a battle reenactment set on an island in the Pacific at the National Museum of the Pacific War.

Vitruvian Salsa Festival

Addison: Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26
Bring your dancing shoes to Vitruvian Park's Amphitheater every Saturday in August for the Vitruvian Salsa Festival. Enjoy live bands, DJs, salsa lessons, and gourmet food trucks each week.

Ford River Race

San Antonio: Aug. 5
Approximately 100 two-person canoe teams compete in a timed heat along the San Antonio River Walk.

Restaurant Weeks

Houston: Aug. 1-Sept. 4
If you happen to visit the bayou city this month, award-winning chefs and top restaurants are making their menus a bit more available—all for a good cause. For more than four weeks, diners get to taste specially priced prix-fixe menus, with all proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank. Last year’s event pulled in $2 million for the nonprofit.
