Event ideas to fill up your weekend include a new exhibit at San Antonio's Witte Museum, Friona's annual celebration of the cheeseburger, and stargazing at Big Spring State Park.

"Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors"

San Antonio: July 21-Sept. 30 
Growing out of President George W. Bush’s personal commitment and the ongoing work of the Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, this traveling exhibit at The Witte Museum brings together 66 full-color portraits and a four-panel mural painted by President Bush of 98 service members and veterans who have served the nation with honor since 9/11, and whom the President has come to know personally since leaving office. 

Paris Balloon and Music Festival

Paris: July 20-22 
The third annual festival will feature 20 hot air balloons including balloon glows and launches, a tethered balloon, live music, craft and food vendors, and a children's area. 

Texas Firefighter Games

Mansfield: Through July 20 
Firefighters from across the state gather in Mansfield for a week of fun competition between departments, in everything from darts and dodgeball to grappling and golf. 

Cheeseburger Festival

Friona: July 21 
Friona intersects three Texas industries, which also happen to be the three ingredients to a perfect cheeseburger: dairy, cattle, and wheat. The 13th annual festival features cooking teams from the surrounding area competing for a $1,000 grand prize. Crafts and other various vendors will be available throughout the day, as well as games for the kids and live music. 

Santa Ana Ball

Brazoria: July 21
A re-enactment of the Santa Ana Ball held in Brazoria in 1836, the evening includes costumes of the period, dinner and drinks, and dancing. 

Night in Old Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg: July 21
Help celebrate the heritage of the Texas Hill Country with a barbecue and chili cookoff, live music, food, drinks, and more.

Patriotic Street Party

Kilgore: July 21
This day of fun and laughter for the whole family will offer water slides, a bike parade, live music, face painting, a lemonade stand, and more. Best of all, it's free. 

Ed Asner: A Man and His Prostate

Grand Prairie: July 21 
Renowned for his work on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," his own series, as well as the Pixar film “Up” and Santa in “Elf,” Mr. Asner is bringing his hilarious pre-Broadway one-man show to Grand Prairie's Uptown Theater.

"Salado Legends"

Salado: July 21, 28; Aug. 4 
History, legend, and memories meet in the epic historical-musical drama for its 26th annual production. Performed outdoors at Tablerock Amphitheater, one of the show's original songs, "Be Careful What You Wish For," weaves the legends of the Tonkawa tribe, the dreams of Spanish explorers, and the hopes of the Scottish settlers into a panoramic tale. 

Don't Tread on My Tri!

San Marcos: July 22 
Swim in beautiful Spring Lake, bike with the epic views of the Texas Hill Country, and run around the Spring Lake area during this classic Texas Hill Country triathlon event. Enjoy a massive Scallywompus-style party at the finish.
