These old-fashioned hors d'oeuvres were prepared in most fashionable Southern homes before the holidays and stored in tins for serving to guests who dropped in unexpectedly.
3/4 lb. sharp Cheddar cheese, grated 3/4 c. butter, softened 2 1/2 c. flour 3/4 tsp. salt 3/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
Blend cheese and butter. Gradually add dry ingredients. Flatten the dough to 1/4 inch thick, and refrigerate 1 hour. Cut into thin strips and twist. Bake at 375 degrees about 10 minutes (don't brown). When cool, store airtight.
