The towns of Oatmeal and Bertram are teaming up for the 42nd annual Oatmeal Festival this Labor Day Weekend. Events include a morning trail ride, barbecue cookoff, a Saturday morning run named “Run for Your Oats,” and a street dance with live music from Dale Watson and Jarrod Birmingham. The celebration began in 1977 to bring awareness to the small town of Oatmeal and has since grown into one of the most delightfully strange small-town festivals: past years have offered games like oatmeal box stacking and cow chip kick-offs and recurring characters like the Grits Guzzler, who tries to tempt festival-goers with grits (which are banned from town during the festival). And you of course don’t want to miss the grand parade or watching oatmeal “rain” down on the festival, dropped from an aircraft.
