Canstruction is a nationwide program that aims to raise awareness about hunger. In Houston, Canstruction is self-organized and is an affiliate of the Society for Design Administration (SDA Houston) and works in partnership with the American Institute of Architects (AIA Houston), as a creative design-build competition and art display that benefits the Houston Food Bank through donations of canned goods. Local teams from architecture and design firms compete to use their skills to create sculptures utilizing canned food and their labels as building blocks to depict their unique designs and receive recognition. While there are 10 awards to attain locally, the awards for Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, and Most Cans advance and compete at the national level.
