50 Miles by Wire, 1875

Fort McKavett was one of the first telegraph stations in West Texas. Come out and see how that landmark event was accomplished in 1875 with Company C. Reenactors from around the world gather at Fort McKavett to present a true snapshot in time as they portray soldiers of the 10th Infantry Regiment that built the telegraph line connecting Forts McKavett and Concho to San Antonio. This reenactment features soldiers and citizens who lived at Fort McKavett nearly 150 years ago. Stop by Hotel McKavett in nearby Scabtown to meet some early Menard County residents. Find the soldier's work party to learn about military telegraphy from Private Edwin Prince (McKavett’s telegraph operator) first hand.
