In honor of the coast’s comeback, our editors share their favorite coastal destinations and activities:
Emily Stone, executive editor: A few months after our daughter was born, my husband and I took a quick trip to Kemah. We stayed in a cottage in town, rode the old-fashioned roller coaster on the Kemah Boardwalk, ate too much ice cream from a local shop, and generally enjoyed acting like kids for a couple days.
Wes Ferguson, managing editor: Once, sometimes twice a winter, my wife and I find a secluded stretch of beach on Padre or Port A. When the sun sets behind the dunes, I dig a pit in the sand and light a mesquite fire. Then we roast Gulf oysters over the embers and under the stars.
Matt Joyce, senior editor: I like the beach, and I like camping. But I don’t particularly like beach camping. Therein lies the appeal of Goose Island State Park. Unique for Texas, the park offers campsites sheltered among coastal live oak trees in close proximity to Aransas Bay and fun attractions like beaches, fishing piers, and seafood joints.
Jane Kellogg Murray, events editor: For all its historic charm—roller coasters, pirates, Victorian architecture, speakeasies!—it’s Galveston’s seafood that always steals my heart. The Hotel Galvez is my favorite place to indulge in this city by the sea; every Sunday it orchestrates a legendary brunch that extends more than 300 feet long and features endless platters of everything from fresh oysters to decadent desserts.
Michael Hoinski, editor-at-large: At the annual Where the Hell is San Leon Festival in the unincorporated town of San Leon—“a small drinking community with a large fishing problem”—I witnessed a rare display of democracy, wherein a mock mayoral election was determined by the candidate who fundraised the most money during a day of hard partying.
