Calling all Texas foodies—we’ve got somethin’ new cooking just for you. Introducing Fuel Up, a newsletter dedicated to travelers who want to learn more about the state’s ever-evolving food scene. Whether you’re craving Texas staples like tacos and barbecue or searching for something more adventurous, Fuel Up will be your insider’s guide.

The newsletter is led by Features Editor Chris Hughes—a Houston-area native with an extensive background in food journalism. Before joining the Texas Highways team in 2023, Hughes was editor in chief of Austin Monthly and previously worked as a food editor for Coastal Living and Boston Magazine. Since taking over our food and dining coverage, Hughes has produced stories on a traditional meat-infused spirit in West Texas, how to cook with prickly pear cacti, and 50 Texas Burgers Worth the Drive.

“Food is the ultimate expression of tradition and heritage and nowhere is that more apparent than Texas,” Hughes says. “From backyard crawfish boils and Saturday barbecue jaunts to late-night food truck hopping that offers a veritable world of global flavors, food can be the most exciting—and certainly most palatable—way to get to know your home state.”

Here is what readers of Fuel Up can expect in their inbox 10 times a year:

• Our latest food stories that appear in print or online
• One food or cocktail recipe to try in the kitchen
• A quick look at in-season produce to seek out on your next farmers market run
• A look at food-centered events taking place across the state

We hope you’ll join us on this culinary journey. Stay hungry!
