For travelers exploring the revitalized Hill Country town of Brownwood, Intermission Bookshop offers a quiet space for reflection. The name is an ode to the building’s past tenant, Queen Theatre, one of 13 cinemas that operated downtown in the 1940s. The theater also acted as a respite for World War II soldiers stationed at Camp Bowie. The bookshop, opened in 2020, sells new and used titles across multiple genres as well as bookish gifts. But its most sought-after attraction isn’t for sale; an archway made of books welcoming shoppers from the front room to the stacks is a favorite of visitors. The arch was created by drilling holes into repurposed books—old, unsellable volumes donated to the shop in its early days—and threading a pipe through to secure them in place. The arch has been the site of countless Instagram photos, surprise engagements, and even a few weddings.
