Marshall’s landscape has included religious institutions since 1841, when founder Peter Whetstone provided property to build a courthouse, a school, and a church to secure the county seat. A few years later, John Bryce and Rev. George Washington Baines, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s great-grandfather, founded the town’s First Baptist Church. Photographer Dave Shafer captured the church for “Small Towns to Visit Now,” but shooting it at sunset came with difficulties. “It may not seem like it, but when the sun is setting, it really moves fast, much faster than you think and want,” Shafer says. He chose a silhouette for a more abstract image. “I wanted to give the viewer a pleasant visual without too much extraneous detail,” he says.
