Looking for a more creative way to treat your sweetie this Valentine’s Day than giving the typical store-bought card, candy or flowers? Feb. 14 is on a Saturday this year, meaning there’s ample time for a getaway to enjoy each other’s company for more than just dinner. Here are a few ideas for special events happening across Texas—as always, be sure to call ahead and make reservations or buy tickets in advance to make sure all goes smoothly.

Wine and dine. Wine lovers can find special dinners and events at the state’s many wineries and wine trails. Messina Hof Winery and Resort locations in Bryan and Fredericksburg offer tickets for an evening of dancing and a three-course dinner that features selections from their wineries on Valentine’s Day. The 42 wineries in the Hill Country offer a Wine Lovers’ Trail from Feb. 6-22, inviting visitors to experience up to four wineries per day at their own pace. Tickets include a box of gourmet chocolates, a full tasting at four wineries per day and a discount on three bottle purchases. Find a nearby bed-and-breakfast to extend a romantic trip for a weekend or even longer. Revisit a love story. Ballet Austin presents a grown-up version of a classic tale in “Belle Redux: A Tale of Beauty and the Beast,” Feb. 13-15. Choreography by artistic director Stephen Mills and a new score by Graham Reynolds create “a dark and intoxicating world of passion and intrigue.”

Dance the night away. Country music favorite Asleep at the Wheel rolls out the tunes for two-stepping at the annual Luckenbach Hug-In and Valentine’s Ball in the little town where everybody is somebody and “ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain.” If you want to make a weekend of it, a camping permit also gets you into the Friday night concert featuring Dale Watson.

Attend a romantic concert. The popular annual Valentine’s Day concert at the Round Top Festival Institute features a musical program titled “From Broadway With Love,” performed by Dick Smith and Friends. The show begins at 2 p.m. at Festival Hill’s ornate concert hall, which adds grandeur to any performance. Take a romantic stroll around the shops in the quaint village nearby before or afterward.

Indulge your sweet tooth. If chocolate is your passion, Dallas by Chocolate has several Valentine’s weekend tour options that feature a range of local chocolatiers, fine dining, food samples, wine, beer and other temptations. In Longview, grab a ticket for the “Death by Chocolate” Murder Mystery, a fundraiser event that offers a decadent evening of chocolates, wine, savory hors d’oeuvres and entertainment. (There’s also the Boerne Chocolate Walk on Feb. 14, but tickets have already sold out—something to plan ahead for next year!)
