The
Magic
Valley

JoMando CruzQuinta Mazatlan in McAllen.

For the first time in Texas Highways history, we dedicated an entire edition to a place unlike anywhere else in the country: the Rio Grande Valley. The four-county region on the tip of South Texas is known for its citrus production, South Padre Island beaches, and world-class birding. The September 2024 issue is packed with even more Valley gems.

In “The Magic Valley,” senior editor and RGV-raised Danielle Lopez writes about the region’s complicated history and the next generation of Valley natives working to make their home the best it can be. Music writer Cat Cardenas’ story “Stomp Your Feet, Clap, and Have a Good Time” follows the musicians working to keep conjunto music alive in the genre’s birthplace. And writer Ryan Cantu eats his way through the Valley in “Savor the Moment,” capturing what makes the region’s cuisine so delectable.

Throughout the rest of the issue, we take readers through the Valley’s natural wonders, offer an introspective essay on the RGV’s largest flea market, and interview Grammy winner Edgar Barrera, the young Latin hitmaker from McAllen.

For those who haven’t visited before, consider this your starter guide to the Rio Grande Valley.
