Not far from one shaded overlook is the Devil’s Backbone Tavern, which opened in 1932. Beer is cheap and cold, and pickup trucks outnumber sedans in the gravel parking lot. A handwritten message on a white board behind the bar says, “If you ain’t here, please sign in. Tell the bartender.” An old-fashioned shuffleboard table completes the picture.
