Historic Gillespie County Jail Tours

Tour this two-story stone structure that served as the fourth jail for Gillespie County, organized in 1848 and constructed in 1885. The ground floor housed a holding area and living quarters for the jailer. The second floor had two steel-clad cells located against the east wall and maximum security cells in the center and at the back. The building was used as a county jail until 1939.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church was dedicated on June 18, 1893. The 675,000 bricks for the church were molded by hand and baked on-site from mud brought by wagon from the Trinity River. Other interesting elements include stained-glass windows from Italy and France and a mural of “The Transfiguration of Christ” from the 1920s. Tours of the church are offered on Saturdays.
