Texas Highways won four City and Regional Magazine Awards at Friday’s CRMA Conference in Denver, a new record for the magazine.
Texas Highways took home the prize for Excellence in Design for the July/August 2024 edition, “Small Town Summer.” This 50th anniversary issue marked the debut of the magazine’s first redesign in nearly a decade. Judges described the new look as “modern and refreshing.” The issue also included Dave Shafer’s photo essay “Running Its Course,” which took home the gold in the Photography category. Judges complimented the essay about life along the Red River in the Panhandle as having excellent pacing, juxtaposition, and sizing.
The September 2024 edition of Texas Highways, titled “The Magic Valley,” won gold in the Special Issue category. The issue was dedicated to exploring the state’s southernmost region, the Rio Grande Valley. Judges called the issue “a dazzling success.”
And for the second year in a row, Creative Director Mark Mahorsky was awarded gold in the Spread Design (circulation more than 45,000) category for “Oh Shell Yeah,” a June 2024 feature about seashell collectors on the Gulf Coast. Judges noted the spread had “excellent integration of images and strong typographic design.”
The four wins come out of Texas Highways’ 10 nominations this year, one of which was for General Excellence. More than 100 judges selected the finalists from 49 magazines across the country. Judges included representatives from publications and media outlets such as AARP Publications, The Atlantic, Garden & Gun, The New Yorker, and more, as well as journalism professors from the Missouri School of Journalism.
