Texans are known for their appetite for all things Texan. In Plano, serious Lone Star lovers can take their devotion a leap further by literally diving into Texas—a Texas-shaped swimming pool, that is.
The Texas Pool, a 160,000-gallon saltwater pool, opened in 1961 and is currently being restored to welcome guests for its 59th summer. According to a report in The Dallas Morning News, the renovation project includes restoring tiles with names of Texas cities on the pool’s bottom.
Pool spokeswoman Janet Vermillion Moos tells the Morning News that workers discovered the city names while working on the restoration. “The original tiles were covered over at some point, some time in the 1970s,” Moos says.
Along with reintroducing the city names, the pool is also expected to reopen as an official landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.
“We plan to have a reunion party for everyone—the public, Texas Pool members—to come out to the pool and see it,” Moos tells the Morning News. “We hope to be celebrating that we are a national landmark. We want to invite people to see the pool and share their experiences and reasons why it’s important to preserve it.”
