Cheeseburger

The “Cheeseburger Capital of Texas” hosts its 10th annual Cheeseburger Festival in City Park on July 18.

In the Panhandle town of Friona, locals champion the cheeseburger because it’s a food that combines the major agricultural products of the area: beef, dairy and wheat. The main event is a cook-off limited to 20 teams, who are provided with beef patties, buns, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and several types of cheese–it’s up to each to bring enough “secret ingredients” and style to set their burgers apart from the rest. Judging begins at 11 a.m., and the public gets to chow down from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. A motorcycle and car show, music, arts-and-crafts booths and other food vendors round out the festivities, which usually draw about 3,500 people. Be sure to show up hungry and in time for lunch so you don’t get left with cold buns!
